My Grandma turned 100!!

It just blows my mind that my grandma is 100. She totally still has her wits about her too.

Here she is singing Amazing Grace at her Birthday party:

Grandma turns 100

My Grandma Rocks

Last month my grandma turned 99. I love this photo that my mom took of
her blowing out the candles. Oh btw LUCY, it was my grandpa’s family that
had all those crazy accidents. And on my dads side one of my relatives traded
his wife for a cow – but we wont get into that…Anyway Grandma sang Amazing Grace
immediately followed by her own rendition of john 3:16.The resonance in her voice
touched my soul.

plant project

This past Christmas I made everyone in my family cactus and succulent arrangements. I purchased the decorative rocks and planters from IKEA and the plants came from Home Depot. I had a great time putting the arrangements together. There was something really therapeutic and festive about the whole processes. Seems like everyone liked them. I’m told that my Grandma (who’s’ 99) has jewelry hanging form the branches of one of the plants. :-)

Last Weekend

IMG_2418.JPGIMG_2420.JPGIMG_2421.JPGIMG_2423.JPG

So last Friday I worked till 9pm or so. I had originally planed to drive down to San Diego on Saturday morning but got inspired to leave Friday night. The plan was that I would have a “mini vacation” alone before seeing my family. I would drive until I found a beach side community that was close to a pub I could walk to and a beach I could surf the next morning.

First I pulled off at Carlsbad and was not into all the jarheads walking around so I decided to keep driving. Next town was Encinitas. I pulled off there and drove around. I liked the vibe downtown and there was a budget motel close by. I checked into the motel and walked to the nearest bar called the “daily double.” I ordered a new castle at first and that was nice. I observed all the surfer dudes and ladies. It was a nice mellow scene. Everyone ignored me and I like that. Then a women came toward the bar where I was standing. I figured she was gonna order something so I moved. I asked what she was gonna get and she said a beer. By then I had moved to the sinister looking Stone Bastard Ale. I gave her a sip and she seemed to like it but decided on a Corona. She later told me that she was a law student with a focus on Human Rights Law – that her dream was to work for the United Nations. She introduced me to her colleague and an old friend of hers visiting from LA. He was a chemist originally from Sri Lanka – a graduate of USC (but I did not hold it against him lol but we did have a good laugh about it) We all got a seat and talked till the bar closed. A very intelligent group actually. I thought it funny that I would meet the only other people who do not live there.

Next day I got up and went to the beach for a while. Encinitas had great waves – a wonderful mellow surf community. The waves were perfect hollow four footers. Not too big and not too small. Headed back to the hotel and showered and then checked out and drove into town for breakfast. I found a really nice diner and ordered waffles and eggs. Then I walked around. Encinitas has a lot of quaint little shops. I found a used bookstore and purchased Steve Martins novella “Shop Girl” for 5 bucks. I also discovered this amazing garden store called Grounded. This place really inspired me for some reason. They have all kinds of potted plants, books, rugs and furniture. All in that clean modern style that I’m always after. Someone actually joked with me the other day about my desire to be a clean cut modern guy. The truth is that I’m a “Boho” tryin’ real hard to be Metro Sexual. Dare to dream haha…

So I drove down to the Bahia where my Family was staying. I decided to go to Ocean Beach. The waves were not as good as this morning but it was still fun. Lots of people on the beach and my sister Natalie and I checked out this pretty cool wave rider machine.

IMG_2430.JPGIMG_2464.JPG Later on that day I got to see my Nephew Guillermo in the flesh. For most of the evening he was sleeping but there was this moment when he opened his eyes. He looked so strong – so confident. I feel like you can really get a sense of how a person will turn out even in those initial days after birth.

That night I somehow got talked into chaperoning my little brother and his friend Richard to TJ. All I can say is that these little kids down there cannot hold their alcohol. By 3am they are all just stupid, stumbling about and babbling nonsense. Or they are yaking in some trashcan in the corner. It was nice to see my brother have a good time though.  And I am now totally up with all the top 40 Hip Hop hits. I can swing my shirt around like a helicopter or let my shoulder lean… haha. But at 19, 24 or 35 years old I cannot bring myself to grind up behind a woman at a club…

It’s a Boy!

We’ll, there’s another reason to call me Uncle Derrek. My Brother’s wife Alma gave birth to a beautiful baby boy! Guillermo Ferguson was born a whopping 8 pounds 9 ounces.

I’m so happy for my brother Duane and his wife Alma and look forward to witnessing their transition into parenthood. I love them dearly and I’m excited to see the baby. The greatest gift that babies bring is their unconditional love and when a new baby is born it’s incredible how much it brings the family closer together. So cool!

This weekend I’m going to visit my new nephew. I think I might go snorkeling and/or body boarding as well.

I hope everyone has a great weekend!

Family Fishing Trip

Tomorrow I embark on a family fishing trip adventure. I have no idea what to expect but I’m really looking forward to it. My Dad, Grandpa and brother in law always go but this time its all five of my brothers and sisters plus uncles nieces and nephews – over 20 of us all together I think.

The 85 foot boat is called the Constitution and sleeps 22. Its funny that it’s called the Constitution because well on the website it had this “doctrine” design with statements like “you shall have the right to fish without the crowds” oh, and also it’s funny because the word constitution also refers to ones well being and well, if I get sea sick my constitution will not be so good on the Constitution har-har. Needless to say I intend to take Dramamine and some bracelet my pharmacist recommended.

I’m hoping to come back with some good photos of the experience. Actually I’ll be happy to just come back in one piece. I have the Salon Series on Saturday so hopefully I wont be so “sea weary.”

Not that there’s anything wrong with that

seinfeld.lrg.jpg

I was having dinner with my Dad and my sister tonight and the conversation went to dating, as both my sister and I are currently single. My Dad is a fan of Seinfeld and unbeknownst to me, his latest joke to people is “hey I got a son who’s over thirty, slim, likes art and has never been married so I’ll just assume he’s gay – not that there’s anything wrong with that!”

Then I was telling them that whenever I happen to mention to my mom that I’ve met someone interesting she says: “…is she Asian?” So my sister was like “dude, no wonder you’re messed up: Your Mom thinks you have an Asian fetish and Dad thinks you’re gay!” then we all laughed out loud.

My family is the best…
