Deep Listening is a collaborative project formed around a mutual admiration for

the World Festival of Sacred Music and the vision of His Holiness the Dalai Lama.
Despite their distinct backgrounds, artists Gilbert Levy and Suzanne Teng have carved
similar paths, dedicating their lives to the promotion of peace and tolerance through music.
In this special performance, the diverse cultural differences of artists and audiences
alike require deep listening and shared spirit as a new dialogue is formed.
Mystic Journey’s ethereal blend of Asian, Middle Eastern and African sounds is a modern
reflection of the ancient world. With Suzanne Teng on world flutes and winds; Gilbert Levy
on world percussion and Turkish saz; Dann Torres on guitar, oud and electric sitar;
and Jon Ossman on upright bass and Indian dalruba; the intercultural ensemble
builds soundscapes that are contemplative, ecstatic and energetic. With guest
apppearance by classical Javanese vocalist Emiko Saraswati Susilo.
Designed by Lloyd Wright, Wayfarers Chapel is nestled in beautiful gardens
with panoramic views of the Pacific Ocean.
Presented by Wayfarers Chapel.

“Remembering the past, living the present, and looking towards the future” is the
ethos that inspires each performance from the invigorating Omo Aché Afro-Cuban Music
& Dance Company. Under the direction of master artist Juan Carlos Blanco, this program
highlights the African cultures preserved by Cuban cabildos, or cultural societies.
Omo Aché brings to life the beliefs of the Yoruba, Arará and Congo religions
through sound and movement associated with the spirit world. With lively percussionists,
singers and dancers, Omo Aché shares stories from their Afro-Cuban roots.

Born in Havana, Juan Carlos Blanco Riera spent over fifteen years performing with
professional Cuban dance companies, including nine years with the renowned
Raices Profundas. Since moving to the U.S., Blanco has been featured in various
productions as a dancer and guest choreographer. In 1998, he founded Omo Aché
to preserve and share Afro-Cuban folkloric stories through song and dance.
Members include Cuban and local artists dedicated to the ethnographic investigation
of traditional Afro-Cuban cultural arts. The company performs in schools,
universities and multi-cultural venues throughout California.
This presentation is planned in conjunction with the Fowler exhibition
Transcultural Pilgrim: Three Decades of Work by José Bedia – a major retrospective and installation
that explores Bedia’s ties to his Cuban-based religion, its central African source,
and his investigation of indigenous American beliefs.
Outdoors, open seating. Bring a blanket or mat.
Presented by the Fowler Museum at UCLA.

Presented and sponsored by Sundays Live at LACMA.

The sensual melodies and syncopated rhythms of samba are recognized around the world as a symbol of Brazil. What most people may not know is that this emotive musical tradition is deeply rooted in spiritual beliefs that reach back to Africa. In this special performance for the World Festival of Sacred Music, Artistic Director Beto González and Samba Society explore the interplay between rural and urban; music and dance; and sacred and secular practices that lie at the heart of Brazilian culture. With Partido Alto Astral, the secular rhythms of samba de roda, batuque,

and partido alto are presented with depth and spiritual resolve.

Samba Society brings its own brand of vintage ‘roots’ samba reminiscent of classic recordings
from the 1970s. Performers include Beto González on vocals and percussion; Simon Carroll on percussion and drums; Bobby Easton on percussion; Mitchell Long on cavaco and guitar; Keith Lungwitz on percussion; Dana Maman on percussion; Mauro Monteiro on vocals; Kátia Moraes
on vocals; Emina Shimanuki on vocals; Kana Shimanuki on vocals; Colin Walker on 7-string guitar; special guest Mestre Amen Santo on percussion; dancers Gisella Ferreira, Rachel Hernández,
and Shelby Williams-González; and very special guest Moacyr Luz from Rio de Janeiro.
Presented by Samba Society with support from the Center for Cultural Innovation – Artist Resource for
Completion grant and the Alliance for California Traditional Arts – Apprenticeship Program.
Sponsored in part by the City of Los Angeles, Department of Cultural Affairs.
